Qualifications: Education and Skills

• A technical diploma, undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Ecological Restoration, or another related field
• Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) or Agrologist (PAg) in British Columbia or immediate eligibility
• Minimum of 5 - 10 years of relevant work experience including specialization in plant identification, vegetation ecology, vegetation and ecosystem surveys, plant restoration, plant prescriptions, and vegetation monitoring
• Experience leading ecological and vegetation field assessments, data collection, data analysis, and reporting
• Vegetation monitoring, trials, research, and statistical analysis
• Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation
• Interest in Business Development will be deemed an asset
• Demonstrated ability to write detailed technical reports and communicate technical information effectively with clients and colleagues
• The ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment and under deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills, experience mentoring, motivating, and leading field teams
• Valid BC driver’s License
• Willingness to work in remote locations

Demonstrated Abilities

• Schedule A pre-site assessments and Schedule B - Site Reclamation Assessments
• Certificate of Restoration Part 2 (CORII) assessments and application support
• Invasive plant species surveys
• Soil classification and/or wetland classification
• Experience with ecosystem mapping (e.g. Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM), Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory (SEI)), pre and post-field desktop mapping, fieldwork, and reporting
• Analysing, evaluating, and interpreting vegetation data using spatial GIS software and statistical programs

Intermediate Vegetation Ecologist

Aski Reclamation LP an indigenous-owned environmental consulting company which integrates First Nations’ knowledge with science, to deliver solutions to our clients and pave the way for industry best practices in Restoration, Reclamation, and Environmental Services.
Aski is seeking a highly motivated and personable Intermediate Vegetation Ecologist to work within our dynamic Restoration Project Team. The successful candidate will concentrate their time on a suite of exciting projects related to native plant restoration of forested and wetlands sites working under the supervision of the Senior Vegetation and Wetland Ecologist and as part of a team of environmental professionals. Responsibilities will be varied and may be adapted to the skill set and experiences brought to the position and will include contributing to and leading the technical components of the restoration portion of reclamation programs, while leading meaningful work for our community as well.

Work Environment

The Intermediate Vegetation Ecologist works in various settings, including natural remote locations; oil and gas, hydroelectric, and mine sites; and the Aski office. During this work, you may be required to hike, drive all-terrain vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles), collect environmental data from aquatic and terrestrial settings, and perform data collection duties requiring a high level of physical fitness and the capacity to operate safely in remote environments. The ability to complete physically demanding tasks, work for prolonged periods in natural settings and potentially adverse weather conditions, and successfully learn to make good judgment calls is a key requirement for this job.
Reports to
Senior Vegetation and Wetland Ecologist
Major Duties
• Support projects from proposal stage to close-out reporting
• Plan and lead field assessments to industry standards and prepare reports for projects within a variety of sectors (oil and gas, hydroelectric, mines)
• Lead and support field programs across northeastern British Columbia, ensuring technical excellence, safety, and quality of deliveries
• Work collaboratively with junior, intermediate, and senior staff, sub-consultants, clients, and government agencies
• Perform as the technical lead for all native plant restoration projects including preparation, design, and implementation of work execution plans
• Establish vegetation monitoring methodologies, lead or assist with monitoring programs, analyze data, and write summary reports
• Conduct invasive plant assessments and develop invasive plant management plans
• Deliver high quality, well-written technical reports on time and within budget
• Prepare or assist with permit applications, environmental assessments, and environmental management plans
• Collaborate with project management teams to develop project proposals and cost estimates
• Provide mentorship and guidance to new and junior staff
• Organize logistics and project resources in a timely manner
• Provide routine project updates to Division Manager
• Demonstrate a proactive approach to safety; remain informed of Emergency Response Plans (ERP) on each site and actively participate in safety and emergency drills; be prepared to respond to emergencies in the field should one occur
• Act as a Site Supervisor onsite and lead tailgate meetings
• Observe and inspecting sites to ensure worksites are safe prior to commencing work
• Work with the health and safety employees to develop site orientation material, Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), and other relevant safety program material

Compensation and Hours

This role is a full-time position. Working hours will vary seasonally. It is expected that workdays in the spring/summer/fall will be 10-12 hours per field day and up to 60 hours per week. Outside of the field season standard office hours will be 30-40 hours per week with potential for time off in the winter.
Compensation for this position is expected to range from $35.00 to $46.00 per hour, dependent on experience and qualifications of successful candidate.
